The most expensive cornerback in history is a defensive prodigy
In short: Derek Stingley Jr. didn't just enter the NFL; he rewrote the record books for his position. From a high school phenom with 27 interceptions to becoming the highest-paid cornerback in league history, his journey is a masterclass in overcoming injury to reach the pinnacle of professional football.
Stingley Jr.'s trajectory began at The Dunham School in Baton Rouge, where he was a standout athlete, earning the Louisiana Gatorade Football Player of the Year award as a senior. His collegiate career at LSU was equally dominant; as a freshman in 2019, he helped the Tigers secure a National Championship while leading the SEC with six interceptions and 21 passes defended. Despite a junior year hampered by significant injuries, his talent was undeniable, leading scouts to project him as a top-tier first-round pick.
The 2022 NFL Draft marked a historic milestone for Stingley Jr. and the Houston Texans. Selected third overall, he became the highest-drafted cornerback in the history of the franchise and tied with Shawn Springs and Jeff Okudah as the highest-drafted corner in NFL history. His path to the top wasn't seamless, however; he was forced to skip physical drills at the NFL Scouting Combine due to a Lisfranc fracture in his foot, yet analysts from Pro Football Focus and Sports Illustrated still ranked him as one of the premier prospects available.
His professional career has been defined by a steady ascent in production and value. After a rookie season in 2022 where he appeared in nine games, his 2023 campaign saw a massive leap, where he recorded five interceptions and 13 pass deflections, earning AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors. By 2024, he achieved a career milestone by starting all 17 games, earning both Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors. This consistent elite performance culminated in a 2025 contract extension worth $90 million over three years, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the history of the NFL.
Beyond the statistics, Stingley Jr. carries a deep football lineage. His father, Derek Stingley Sr., competed in the Arena Football League, and his grandfather, Darryl Stingley, played for the New England Patriots. This multi-generational connection to the sport provides a backdrop to his rapid rise from a five-star high school recruit to a record-breaking cornerstone of the Houston Texans' defense.
