From Texas standout to NFL Pro Bowl linebacker and record-breaker
In short: Derrick Johnson transitioned from a versatile three-sport high school star to a dominant force in the NFL. After a stellar collegiate career at the University of Texas, he became a cornerstone of the Kansas City Chiefs defense, once tying an NFL single-game record for interception returns for touchdowns.
Born in Waco, Texas, on November 22, 1982, Johnson first demonstrated elite athleticism in high school. A three-sport standout in football, track, and basketball, he was a state qualifier in both the triple jump and the 100-meter dash. His football prowess was equally evident, earning him Parade magazine high school All-America honors and a spot in the inaugural U.S. Army All-American Bowl in 2000.
At the University of Texas at Austin, Johnson became a central figure in the Longhorns' success, including their 11–1 season and 2005 Rose Bowl victory. He was a consensus All-American in 2004 and earned the Dick Butkus Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy. These achievements propelled him to the 2005 NFL Draft, where the Kansas City Chiefs selected him 15th overall in the first round.
Johnson's professional career was defined by longevity and high-impact plays. Over 13 seasons with the Chiefs, he earned four Pro Bowl selections. A career highlight occurred on January 3, 2010, when he returned two interceptions for touchdowns in a single game against the Denver Broncos, tying an NFL single-game record. He eventually signed a significant five-year, $34 million contract with the Chiefs in November 2010, which included $15 million in guarantees.
Beyond his defensive dominance, Johnson's versatility was tested when the Chiefs transitioned from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defensive scheme in 2009, forcing him to move from outside to inside linebacker. He concluded his professional career with a brief stint for the Oakland Raiders in 2018.
