In short: How does a film survive nearly a decade in 'production limbo' only to become the highest-grossing Bengali movie of its year? Dhumketu is a masterclass in artistic persistence, evolving from a 2015 announcement into a sprawling spy thriller that defied every industry expectation.

The making of Dhumketu is defined by extreme endurance. Announced in September 2015 as the sixth collaboration between actors Dev and Subhashree Ganguly, principal photography began in October 2015 but faced immediate hurdles. Production ceased due to a producer's failure to give the FCTWEI a mandatory 15-day warning for exterior scenes. While tensions eventually eased, the project would soon enter a grueling nine-year period of 'production hell.'

The film's creative DNA is rooted in Kaushik Ganguly’s own history. The concept was inspired by his 2001 telefilm Ulka, which itself drew from the real-life kidnapping of an Indian Oil Corporation executive. To achieve a grounded aesthetic, Ganguly sought to strip away Dev's usual 'larger-than-life' stardom for a realistic portrayal of Bhanu—a man who must navigate a complex life as both a 30-year-old fugitive and an 80-year-old disguise. This required Dev to undergo significant physical transformations, including gaining 30 kg to play the older role.

Despite multiple postponements—including a missed 2016 Durga Puja release to avoid clashing with another film—Dhumketu finally premiered on August 14, 2025. The payoff was historic: it became the fastest Bengali film to enter both the ₹5 crore and ₹10 crore clubs. By grossing over 28 crore, it secured its place as the second-highest-grossing Bengali film of all time, proving that a decade of delay can sometimes culminate in a cultural landmark.

The narrative itself mirrors this complexity, following Bhanu’s journey from a reported death to an extremist mission. The story weaves through themes of sacrifice and secret identities, as Bhanu navigates his final days by secretly providing for his father and ensuring the well-being of his wife and daughter before his ultimate fate.
