In short: Imagine a movie so complex it takes ten years to finish. From creative clashes and missing millions to being stranded in foreign countries, Dhruva Natchathiram is a masterclass in the grueling reality of independent filmmaking. It is a story of persistence against every possible cinematic hurdle.

Dhruva Natchathiram, a Tamil-language spy action thriller directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, has become a landmark case of 'production hell.' Originally announced in 2013 with actor Suriya, the project was shelved after just months due to creative differences. It was revived in 2015 with Vikram as the lead, but even then, the path was fraught. The film faced a revolving door of cast and crew changes, including multiple cinematographers and the eventual replacement of several lead and supporting actors due to scheduling conflicts.

The production was a logistical marathon, spanning seven countries. The team filmed in New York City, Slovenia, Bulgaria, the United Arab Emirates, Georgia, and Turkey. These shoots were often interrupted by unforeseen obstacles, such as being stranded in Georgia after a document oversight denied them entry to Turkey. Despite these efforts, the film languished for years because of Menon's severe financial constraints, which also affected several of his other projects. The production was so protracted that the film's runtime eventually exceeded four hours, forcing the team to split it into parts.

The legal and financial hurdles were immense. By late 2023, the film faced a release blockade due to unpaid debts, with producer K. Rajan estimating Menon's total debt at over ₹60 crore (approximately US$6.2 million). The Madras High Court intervened, requiring deposits to ensure a smooth release. It wasn't until April 2026 that the film was finally cleared for release after most of the debts were settled, marking a decade of struggle to bring the 'War Chapter' to the screen.
