The man who stopped a Super Bowl record from happening
In short: In one of the most lopsided games in football history, Don Beebe performed a desperate act of defensive heroism. Despite his team being crushed, he sprinted across the field to prevent an opponent from reaching a milestone that would have rewritten the record books forever.
Don Beebe's career is defined by high-stakes moments and statistical dominance. After setting multiple records at Chadron State College—including scoring a touchdown in every single game of his senior year—he was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in 1989. He spent nine seasons in the NFL, primarily with the Bills, where he became a fixture of their era as they lost four consecutive Super Bowls.
His most famous individual play occurred during Super Bowl XXVII against the Dallas Cowboys. The score was already 52–17 in favor of Dallas. Defensive tackle Leon Lett recovered a fumble and began to celebrate prematurely while holding the ball out toward the goal line. Beebe streaked down the field and knocked the ball loose just before Lett crossed the plane. This prevented Dallas from reaching 58 points, which would have set a new Super Bowl record.
Beebe's career also featured significant 'what if' moments. In 1996, while playing for the Green Bay Packers, he scored a 59-yard touchdown in an overtime victory against the San Francisco 49ers. However, replays suggested he should have been ruled down after being tagged by Marquez Pope; because video review was unavailable at the time, the score stood.
Beyond the field, Beebe transitioned into a multi-faceted career in sports leadership. He founded House of Speed, LLC, which expanded to eleven states by 2006, and coached high school teams to consecutive state championships in Illinois before becoming the head coach at Aurora University in 2018.
