Dominica's football journey from 1932 to historic ten-goal victories
In short: From their first international match in 1932 to a crushing 10–0 defeat by Mexico, the Dominica national football team has endured a rollercoaster of regional competition. Yet, amidst the heavy losses, they achieved a historic milestone that remains their greatest triumph to date.
The Dominica national football team, governed by the Dominica Football Association since 1970, has navigated a complex path through Caribbean and international football. While the nation has never reached the FIFA World Cup or the CONCACAF Gold Cup, it has established a presence in the CONCACAF Nations League, competing twice in both League B and League C. Their regional history is deeply intertwined with neighbors like Martinique, whom they first faced in 1932 in a 1–0 victory for Dominica. The association became an associate member of CONCACAF in 1990 before gaining full membership in 1994. Additionally, the team is currently an affiliate member of the CFU within the Caribbean Zone.
The team's history is marked by significant highs and lows. In the 1970s, they found success in the Windward Islands Tournament, securing the title in 1971 through decisive victories over Saint Vincent and Grenada. However, the team has also faced overwhelming challenges in World Cup qualifying. In the 2006 qualifiers, for instance, they suffered a massive aggregate defeat against Mexico, losing 10–0 in the first leg and 8–0 in the second leg at Aguascalientes. Their competitive history includes multiple appearances in the CONCACAF Nations League. They have also participated in the qualifying rounds of the CFU Championship throughout the 1980s.
Despite these struggles, Dominica achieved a landmark moment on 15 October 2010. During the first qualifying round of the 2010 Caribbean Cup, they secured their greatest-ever victory by defeating the British Virgin Islands 10–0. This historic performance was fueled by striker Kurlson Benjamin, who scored five goals in the match. Today, the squad continues to evolve, featuring players from clubs across North America, Europe, and the Caribbean. In contrast to their 2010 success, they suffered heavy defeats during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Panama and Nicaragua. Furthermore, Canada eliminated them from the 2018 World Cup qualifying process with a 6–0 aggregate score.
