From UCLA record-breaker to NFL backup: the resilient journey of Dorian Thompson-Robinson
In short: A standout collegiate star can face a volatile professional career. After setting records at UCLA, Dorian Thompson-Robinson navigated the intense competition of the NFL, enduring injuries and roster shifts before finding a new chapter in the United Football League.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson's ascent began at UCLA, where his dual-threat capabilities left a lasting mark. During his sophomore season in 2019, he set a school record for total offense in a single game, amassing 564 yards against Washington State. That season, he accounted for 2,899 total yards, ranking tenth all-time for a Bruin. His ability to impact the game on both fronts was further highlighted in 2020, when he became the first Bruin to record 300 passing yards and 100 rushing yards in a single game against Colorado.
His professional trajectory has been characterized by significant shifts in role and environment. After being picked by the Cleveland Browns during the 2023 NFL draft's fifth round, Thompson-Robinson dealt with a fluctuating NFL depth chart. He served as a backup to Deshaun Watson, stepping in as the starter for the 35th time in Browns history during a game against the Baltimore Ravens in October 2023. His tenure in Cleveland was marked by various challenges, including injuries to his finger and hip, and frequent changes in the team's starting lineup.
Following his time in Cleveland, Thompson-Robinson's career entered a new phase. After being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in March 2025, he eventually moved to the United Football League. In 2026, he joined the Orlando Storm before being traded to the Birmingham Stallions in April. As the Stallions' starter under head coach A. J. McCarron, he demonstrated his continued capability, leading the team to a 20–17 victory over the DC Defenders shortly after his arrival.
