From high school record-breaker to NFL depth: the resilient career of Malik Davis
In short: Before stepping onto NFL fields, Malik Davis was rewriting the record books in Florida. His journey through college injuries and professional roster shifts highlights the grueling reality of professional football, where every season is a battle for a spot on the active roster.
Malik Davis's ascent began at Jesuit High School, where he established himself as a dominant force in Hillsborough County. In his final year, he tallied 2,469 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns—the best in the county—guiding his squad to a 5A state title and a 12-1 season. By the end of his high school career, he held the county record for all-time rushing yards with 7,025, surpassing the previous mark held by Ray-Ray McCloud.
His collegiate tenure at the University of Florida was marked by both brilliance and significant setbacks. While playing as a true freshman in 2017, he set an SEC record for freshmen by recording two rushing touchdowns in one match against Vanderbilt. However, his momentum was frequently interrupted by injuries, including a season-ending injury against Georgia in 2017 and a knee injury against Colorado State in 2018 that required a medical redshirt.
Davis's professional career with the Dallas Cowboys has been a test of persistence. After going undrafted in 2022, he navigated the complexities of the practice squad and active roster elevations. His resilience was tested through various roster moves, including being waived and re-signed multiple times to provide depth. Despite facing injuries, such as a calf and eye injury in late 2025 that landed him on injured reserve, he continued to contribute, including a notable 43-yard rushing touchdown against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 13 of the 2025 season.
