A lost medieval kingdom hidden within a painting becomes a gateway for time-traveling thieves
In short: In the 2025 film Doraemon: Nobita's Art World Tales, a simple school assignment leads Nobita and his friends into a mysterious, painted world. They discover the lost Principality of Arturia, a medieval European realm trapped in a canvas, where they must battle a time-traveling thief and a legendary demon.
The film, directed by Yukiyo Teramoto, marks the 45th anniversary of the Doraemon movie series. The narrative begins when a space-time anomaly causes a painting of a 13th-century castle to fall onto Nobita. Using a gadget called the Entering Light, the group steps into the artwork, only to find that the kingdom of Arturia is a real, historical location in Europe that vanished due to a volcanic eruption. This setting was inspired by extensive location scouting across Italy, as the production team sought to ground the fantasy in authentic medieval atmosphere.
The plot thickens when the group encounters Pal, a member of the Time Patrol, and his adversary, a painting thief named Sodoro. Sodoro attempts to justify his crimes by claiming he is rescuing art from the kingdom's inevitable destruction. However, his actions inadvertently unleash the demon Esael, who possesses the power to turn living beings into stone. The conflict forces Nobita to rely on his own artistic efforts—specifically a crayon drawing of Doraemon—to save his friends and restore the world of the painting.
To ensure artistic authenticity, Teramoto consulted with experts from the Tokyo University of the Arts, meticulously detailing the film's depictions of painting techniques and materials. The film’s success was immediate, securing the top spot at the Japanese box office for its first six weeks. Beyond the spectacle, the story explores the emotional value of art, concluding with a reflection on how even a child's simple graffiti can carry profound meaning when it is created with genuine affection.
