The Oklahoma politician whose family legacy shaped state law for decades
In short: Born into a political dynasty, Drew Edmondson rose from a Navy veteran to become Oklahoma's longest-serving Attorney General. His career spanned high-stakes corruption investigations and intense legal battles, leaving a mark on the state's judicial landscape that may never be broken.
Drew Edmondson, a Democrat born in Washington, D.C., in 1946, represents a significant chapter in Oklahoma's political history. His family ties to the state are deep: his father, Ed Edmondson, served in the U.S. Congress from 1952 to 1972, and his uncle, J. Howard Edmondson, was a former governor and U.S. Senator. This legacy continued through Drew's brother, James E. Edmondson, a justice on the Oklahoma Supreme Court.
Edmondson's legal career was defined by his tenure as Oklahoma's 16th Attorney General, a position he held from 1995 to 2011. During this time, he navigated complex legal terrain, including a lawsuit against the tobacco industry and a corruption investigation into State Insurance Commissioner Carroll Fisher, which led to Fisher's impeachment and resignation. He also oversaw investigations into WorldCom and its CEO, Bernard Ebbers, regarding state securities law violations.
His career was not without significant controversy. During his time as District Attorney for Muskogee County (1983–1992), he faced criticism regarding sentencing, specifically a case involving Donald Lee Robertson that became a focal point during his 1992 congressional bid. Additionally, he faced scrutiny for his refusal to appoint independent counsel to investigate chemist Joyce Gilchrist after she was accused of falsifying evidence in hundreds of cases.
Despite multiple attempts to reach higher office, including unsuccessful bids for Governor in 2010 and 2018, Edmondson's influence remains notable. Due to term limits passed by Oklahoma voters in 2010, his 16-year tenure as Attorney General is likely to remain an unbroken record in the state.
