How a breakout season at Ohio State launched a professional football career
In short: From a highly-ranked recruit to an NFL standout, Dre'Mont Jones has navigated the intense pressures of professional football. His journey involves significant contract deals, injury setbacks, and a pivotal breakout year that transformed his trajectory from a college standout into a versatile defensive force.
Dre'Mont Jones' ascent began at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland, where he graduated in 2015 as a four-star recruit. Ranked as the 7th best player in Ohio and the 170th in the nation, he committed to Ohio State University on June 18, 2014. Following a 2015 redshirt year, he emerged as a premier defensive lineman, securing 2016 Freshman All-American status from the Football Writers Association of America following 52 tackles.
A defining moment in his collegiate career occurred during his redshirt junior season in 2018. Following an injury to projected first-round pick Nick Bosa on September 15, Jones assumed a larger role on the defensive line. He started all 14 games, recording 8.5 sacks and 43 tackles, earning first-team All-Big Ten Conference honors. He uniquely became the initial defensive lineman in Ohio State history to notch two defensive touchdowns within one season.
Jones entered the NFL in 2019, selected by the Denver Broncos in the third round as the 71st overall pick. His professional career has been marked by both high-level production and physical challenges. He won the AFC Defensive Player of the Week twice as a rookie for Denver and later secured a three-year, $51.53 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks in March 2023. Despite facing injuries, such as a knee injury in September 2020 and a hip injury in December 2022, he has continued to find success across multiple franchises, including the Tennessee Titans and the New England Patriots.
