How Dua Lipa rewrote the rules of the UK singles charts
In short: Beyond the catchy hooks of her global hits lies a series of unprecedented chart achievements. From record-breaking stays in the top ten to unprecedented simultaneous chart dominance, the English singer has fundamentally altered the statistical landscape of modern pop music.
Dua Lipa's ascent began in 2015 with her debut single "New Love" following her signing with Warner Bros. Records. By 2016, tracks like "Hotter than Hell" and "Blow Your Mind (Mwah)" had established her presence. Her 2017 self-titled debut album achieved significant international reach, entering the top 10 in nations including the United Kingdom, Australia, and the Netherlands. The album featured several hits, most notably "New Rules," which became her first number one single in the UK.
Lipa's second studio album, 2020's Future Nostalgia, brought even more complex chart milestones. On the UK Singles Chart, the primary track "Don't Start Now" set a new benchmark: no other British woman has spent more time within the top 10 without hitting the top spot. Her dominance was further evidenced when "Don't Start and Now," "Physical," and "Break My Heart" all occupied the UK top 10 at the same time, making her only the fifth female artist to achieve such a feat.
Her global impact extends to the US and Belgium as well. On the Billboard Hot 100, "Levitating" became the second longest running top 10 single and the longest running without reaching number 1 in the chart's history. Her track "Fever", featuring Angèle, matched the record for the most consecutive weeks at number one on Belgium's Ultratop Wallonia chart. Her discography also includes significant philanthropic work, such as performing on the charity single "Bridge over Troubled Water" for Grenfell Tower victims and participating in the pandemic-relief track "Times Like These."
