The playmaker who outshone Messi and Özil in a single season
In short: In 2011, a young Serbian midfielder recorded an assist tally that trailed only two of the greatest players in football history. Dušan Tadić’s journey from Bačka Topola to the heights of the Champions League is a masterclass in consistent, elite-level creativity.
Dušan T לוš Tadić’s rise began in Serbia, where he debuted for Vojvodina at just 17 years old in 2006. After a period of development in his hometown, he moved to the Dutch club Groningen in 2010 for €1.23 million. It was here that his world-class vision first became undeniable. During the 2010–11 season, Tadić recorded 22 assists in 41 matches, a figure that placed him third in all of Europe, surpassed only by Lionel Messi and Mesut Özil.
His career trajectory saw him navigate the Premier League with Southampton and find immense success in the Eredivisie with Twente and Ajax. At Southampton, he made history by equaling the Premier League record for assists in a single match, providing four assists during an 8–0 victory over Sunderland in October 2014. However, his most iconic European moment came in March 2019, when his decisive performance helped Ajax secure a 4–1 upset against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. That night, he became only the ninth player to earn a perfect 10/10 rating from L'Équipe.
On the international stage, Tadić has been a cornerstone of the Serbian national team since his 2008 debut. He has captained his country through the 2022 FIFA World Cup and competed in UEFA Euro 2024 before announcing his retirement from international football in July 2024. His club legacy is defined by prolific numbers, including 105 goals and 112 assists in 241 appearances for Ajax, cementing his reputation as one of the most impactful attacking midfielders of his generation.
