The cinematic legacy of a film that rose from a director's death
In short: In 1997, a high-budget thriller was abruptly halted by the death of its director. Years later, a new film emerged under the same name, serving as a tribute to a lost vision while finding its own massive commercial success.
The 2005 Indian Hindi-language action spy thriller *Dus* is more than just a commercial success; it is a cinematic tribute to director Mukul S. Anand. Anand died while filming an incomplete version of a film with the same title, which featured Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan. That original production had an unprecedented budget of ₹200 million before it was cancelled following his death.
Directed by Anubhav Sinha, the 2005 version is a distinct entity from the 1997 project. While both shared Sanjay Dutt as the lead and producer Nitin Manmohan, Sinha's film follows a different plot involving seven fictional Special Investigation Team (SIT) officers. The narrative centers on Siddhant Dheer, played by Dutt, as he investigates a terrorist plot targeting 20,000 people on May 10.
The film became a significant cultural moment in 2005, ranking as the tenth highest-grossing film of that year with a total box office gross of approximately ₹388.4 million. Its soundtrack, composed by Vishal–Shekhar, was also a massive hit, becoming the sixth highest-selling album of the year with roughly 1.7 million units sold. The track 'Dus Bahane' was notably the most played song of 2005.
Despite the mixed critical reception—with some reviewers calling it a racy actioner lacking common sense—the film's impact was undeniable. It successfully navigated the transition from a lost production to a major commercial triumph, leaving a lasting mark on Indian cinema through its music and high-stakes espionage.
