The title of this massive series actually means absolutely nothing
In short: Fans often assume "Durarara" is a clever onomatopoeia for a revving engine. In reality, the name was born from a moment of pure randomness. This quirk of origin mirrors the series' own structure: a sprawling, chaotic web of intersecting lives in the city of Ikebukuro.
Created by Ryohgo Narita, Durarara!! is a Japanese light novel series that premiered in April 2004. The narrative is defined by its massive scale, featuring approximately eleven main characters whose lives intersect in the city of Ikebukuro. The story is unique in its delivery; the perspective shifts frequently—sometimes between every episode in the anime—allowing the reader to see the same incidents from multiple viewpoints. This creates a complex tapestry where the plot develops through the fragmented knowledge of various individuals, from an information broker to a mysterious underworld courier.
The series centers on the 'underbelly' of Ikebukuro, a setting that serves as the medium for both the plot's progression and its frequent random violence. Key figures include Mikado Ryūgamine, a boy seeking city excitement, and Celty Sturluson, a 'dullahan' from Irish folklore who works as an underworld courier while searching for her stolen head. The narrative also involves the 'Dollars,' an anonymous internet-based gang, and Shizuo Heiwajima, a man of superhuman strength.
Despite its popularity, the series' expansion has faced hurdles. While a sequel, Durarara!! SH, began in 2014, it has not continued, likely due to Narita's health conditions. However, the franchise's reach remains significant; by March 2018, the light novels had over 5.6 million copies in circulation. The series has been adapted into multiple manga, a 36-episode second anime season, and several visual novels, cementing its status as a complex, multi-perspective 'wild ride' for its audience.
