The striker who became a nightmare for Italy's finest defenders
In short: From the youth academy of América de Cali to the heights of Serie A, Duván Zapata has built a reputation as a relentless force. His combination of physical power and technical agility has seen him dominate leagues and earn the respect of the game's most legendary defenders.
Duván Zapata's journey through professional football is defined by a steady ascent through South American and Italian leagues. After joining América de Cali's academy at age 13 in 2004, he made his professional debut in 2008. His talent quickly moved him across the Atlantic, leading to a prolific stint with Argentina's Estudiantes, where he scored 16 goals in 33 matches during the 2012–13 season.
His arrival in Italy's Serie A in 2013 marked the beginning of a decade-long tenure in one of the world's most defensive-minded leagues. After spells with Napoli and Udinese, Zapata found his most significant success at Atalanta. During the 2018–19 season, he demonstrated extraordinary scoring form, netting 23 league goals and finishing as the joint-top scorer in Serie A alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Fabio Quagliarella.
Zapata's physical profile—characterized by strength, height, and an ability to hold up possession—has made him a tactical asset. His impact was so pronounced that former Juventus and Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci identified him in October 2024 as the toughest opponent he had ever faced. This reputation is built on a versatile skill set that includes aerial dominance, high defensive work-rate, and clinical finishing.
Despite facing setbacks, such as an ACL injury in October 2024 that sidelined him for the remainder of the 2024–25 season, Zapata has remained a central figure in professional football. His career has seen him represent Colombia in major tournaments like the Copa América, where his composure in high-pressure moments, such as penalty shoot-outs, has been vital to his national team's efforts.
