In short: In 2007, Arsenal released 12-year-old Dwight Gayle because of his height. Instead of fading away, he climbed the English football pyramid from semi-professional leagues to the Premier League, proving that physical stature isn't the only metric for elite performance.

Dwight Gayle's journey is a classic tale of perseverance through the English football pyramid. After being released by Arsenal at age 12 due to his height, Gayle pivoted to education, studying carpentry and working in office refurbishment. After playing alongside Ryan in the Essex Olympian Football League, he joined Stansted, netting 57 goals throughout the 2010–11 season. He initially focused on his studies by taking carpentry courses. Following this, he found work refurbishing various offices.

His ascent continued through Dagenham & Redbridge and Peterborough United, eventually leading to a record £4.5 million transfer to Crystal Palace in 2013. At Palace, he became a consistent threat, finishing as the club's top scorer in all competitions for three consecutive seasons, despite facing frequent injury challenges. This tenacity earned him a move to Newcastle United in 2016, where he spent six years and scored 34 goals in 122 appearances. He first arrived at Crystal Palace following a loan spell at Peterborough United. His move to Newcastle was secured after he had signed a five-year contract with the Magpies.

During the 2016–17 campaign, Gayle's influence at Newcastle peaked as he achieved the feat of 20 league goals, a milestone not reached since Alan Shearer. Despite recurring hamstring and knee injuries that often limited his playing time, his ability to find the net remained a constant. After stints with West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City, and Derby County, Gayle retired at the end of the 2024–25 season following a period with Hibernian. His career included a loan period at West Bromwich Albion where he was named the Championship Player of the Month. He later joined Hibernian in September 2024.
