How a student manager rose to NBA head coach
In short: From managing for Bob Knight at Indiana to leading the Dallas Mavericks, Dusty May’s ascent is a masterclass in climbing the ranks. His journey through the collegiate landscape includes a historic NCAA championship and a record-breaking run that redefined Big Ten dominance.
Dusty May’s coaching lineage is rooted in the fundamentals of the Indiana basketball tradition. Following his 1995 departure from Eastern Greene High School, May worked as a student manager for Bob Knight's Indiana University between 1996 and 2000. This early exposure to elite program management preceded a decade of ascending roles, including administrative positions at USC and a first assistant coaching job at Eastern Michigan in 2005.
May’s breakthrough as a head coach arrived at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), where he led the Owls from 2018 to 2024. His 2023 campaign was particularly notable, guiding the No. 9 seed to the program's first Final Four and securing a school-record 35 wins. This success paved the way for his appointment as the 18th head coach at the University of Michigan in March 2024, a role that would see him secure a five-year contract averaging $3.75 million annually.
At Michigan, May orchestrated one of the most dominant stretches in modern college basketball. In 2025, he led the Wolverines to a Big Ten championship and a 27–10 record, marking a massive 19-win improvement from the previous season. The following year, his 2026 squad achieved the pinnacle of the sport, winning the NCAA Division I National Championship by defeating UConn 69–63. This historic run included a single-season point differential of +713, a Big Ten record. Following this unprecedented success, May transitioned to the professional ranks, being hired as the head coach of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks in June 2026.
