In short: The Electorate of Cologne was an ecclesiastical principality where the archbishop wielded both spiritual and secular power. From the 10th century until the early 19th, this state shaped the politics of the Holy Roman Empire, serving as a critical hub for trade, religion, and the influence of the Wittelsbach dynasty.

The Electorate of Cologne originated in 953, when Emperor Otto I granted his brother, Bishop Bruno, the status of a secular duke to bolster his authority against rival nobles. This transformation turned the archbishopric into a powerful state, encompassing temporal lands along the Rhine and the Duchy of Westphalia. By the end of the 12th century, the archbishop was one of the seven electors responsible for choosing the Holy Roman Emperor, ranking second only to the Elector of Mainz among ecclesiastical princes.

The electorate’s history was marked by constant friction between the archbishop and the city of Cologne. Following the Battle of Worringen in 1288, the archbishop lost significant control over the city, which eventually became a Free Imperial City in 1475. This forced the archbishops to relocate their residence to Bonn, which served as the capital from 1597 until 1794. The region also faced intense religious upheaval during the 16th century, notably when Archbishop Gebhard Truchsess von Waldburg converted to Calvinism in 1582, triggering the destructive Cologne War.

The war ended in a major victory for the Counter-Reformation, with Ernst of Bavaria securing the see. From 1583 to 1761, the electorate functioned as a secundogeniture for the House of Wittelsbach, with archbishops often holding multiple bishoprics simultaneously. This era of influence concluded with the French occupation in 1794 and the formal secularization of the electorate’s remaining territories during the German mediatization of 1803. While the political state vanished, the Archdiocese of Cologne was reestablished in 1824 and continues to exist today.
