From national javelin thrower to the screen of Netflix
In short: Before she was a recognizable face in action-comedies and video game adaptations, Ella Balinska was competing at the national level in track and field. Her journey from the javelin pit to the spotlight reveals a versatile path of athletic discipline and academic persistence in the performing arts.
Born in London in 1996, Balinska’s upbringing was a cultural tapestry of Polish, British, and Caribbean heritage. This diverse background eventually informed her career as an actress, leading her to pursue formal training in the UK. Her early life was marked by a balance of high-level athletics and academic preparation, notably competing as a javelin thrower for Team London and playing county-level netball.
Her transition into professional acting involved a non-linear educational path. After attending James Allen's Girls' School in Dulwich, she moved to the Arts Educational School in Chiswick. She later enrolled at a performing arts college in Guildford, where she took a unique hiatus from her studies in 2018 to begin working. She eventually returned to the program in 2020 to finish her degree, graduating in 2021 with a Bachelor of Arts in Acting.
Balinska’s professional portfolio spans various genres, from the 2019 action-comedy Charlie's Angels—which served as a sequel to a 1976 series—to the 2022 Netflix live-action adaptation of Resident Evil. She has also branched into the gaming world, providing the voice and likeness for the protagonist of the role-playing game Forspoken. Beyond her own performances, she has established a scholarship at her alma mater to support students from diverse backgrounds, aiming to broaden cultural representation in the acting industry.
Her work reflects a commitment to both mainstream entertainment and niche artistic expansion. By supporting the British Fashion Council and creating educational opportunities for underrepresented actors, she balances her role as a commercial talent with a focus on industry advocacy.
