In short: In 1991, a thirty-one-year-old basketball player was preparing to captain his national team. However, a single meeting with Partizan's management changed his life forever. He was convinced to retire from playing immediately, trading his role as a point guard for a sudden, transformative career as a professional head coach.

Željko Obradović’s transition from a reliable point guard to the most decorated coach in European basketball history is one of the sport's most dramatic pivots. While he had already established himself as a standout player for Borac Čačak and Partizan, his coaching odyssey began abruptly in the summer of 1991. During a training camp for the Yugoslav national team, a meeting with Partizan's leadership—including president Radojica Nikčević—convinced him to abandon his playing career to become the club's head coach.

The move was supported by the expertise of veteran professor Aleksandar Nikolić, who provided advisory services to the debutante coach. This period launched a three-decade career defined by unprecedented dominance. Obradović achieved the rare 'Triple Crown' twice, once with Partizan in 1992 and again with Panathinaikos in 2007. His trophy cabinet is staggering, containing 66 club titles and honours, including a record nine EuroLeague championships won across five different clubs.

Beyond his club achievements, he guided Yugoslavia to victories in the 1997 EuroBasket and the 1998 FIBA World Championship. Despite the high-pressure nature of his career—marked by high-profile moves to Benetton Treviso, Real Madrid, and Fenerbahçe—he has remained a central figure in the sport. Even his recent departure from Partizan in late 2025, following criticisms of club irregularities, was met with massive public demonstrations of support, underscoring his enduring legacy in European basketball.
