In short: Enver Hoxha transformed a semifeudal Ottoman relic into an industrialized nation with one of the world's most tightly controlled societies. Yet, his radical vision required him to break ties with every major superpower, leaving Albania as a lonely, self-sufficient island of 'Hoxhaism' in a rapidly changing world.

Born in 1908 into a family of Muslim cloth merchants, Enver Hoxha was educated in France and Belgium before returning to Albania. After the Italian invasion in 1939, he refused to join the Fascist Party and instead established a communist cell in a tobacco store. By 1941, with Yugoslav assistance, he founded the Albanian Communist Party (later the Party of Labour), eventually becoming its first secretary in 1943 at age 34.

Hoxha's rule was defined by radical economic and social engineering. He confiscated farmland to create collective farms, achieving near-total self-sufficiency in food crops. By the 1980s, industry contributed over half of Albania's gross national product. While he successfully eliminated illiteracy and disease, these gains were enforced through brutal Stalinist tactics: the state imprisoned or executed thousands of landowners, religious leaders, and political dissidents while closing all churches and mosques.

What distinguished Hoxha was his extreme ideological purity. He broke with Yugoslavia in 1948, aligned with the USSR initially, but then severed ties with Nikita Khrushchev in 1961. After a period of cooperation with China, he broke with them again in 1978 following Mao Zedong's death. By declaring Albania a model socialist republic that would pursue communism independently of any other power, he created a unique, isolated political identity known as Hoxhaism.

Hoxha maintained effective control until his death in 1985, even ordering the execution of several high-ranking officials in 1981 to ensure a loyal succession. His legacy is one of profound contradiction: a leader who modernized infrastructure and literacy through state violence, while simultaneously constructing a society so insulated from the outside world that it became a geopolitical anomaly.
