In short: Following the fall of communism, Albania's ruling party faced a choice: vanish or evolve. By shedding its Marxist-Leninist roots and rebranding itself, the Party of Labour successfully transitioned into the Socialist Party, a major force in the country's new democratic landscape and a key player in European politics.

The origins of the Socialist Party of Albania (PS) lie in the Party of Labour, which held absolute power for over four decades under the leadership of Enver Hoxha. Following the end of World War II, the communist-led forces emerged victorious after competing against resistance groups like the National Front and the Legality Party. Hoxha, who served as prime minister from 1944 to 1954, led the party through a period of total dominance until the late 1980s.

As the communist system began to fracture, Hoxha's successor, Ramiz Alia, was compelled to implement restricted reforms. By December 1990, Alia announced that the party would relinquish its monopoly on power. This transition culminated in June 1991, when the party reorganized at an extraordinary congress, officially becoming the Socialist Party to survive within a multi-party system. This new entity was no longer Marxist-Leninist, but rather a social-democratic, centre-left party.

Under the leadership of Fatos Nano, the party sought international legitimacy, becoming a member of the Socialist International. After a period of political shifts, including the resignation of Nano in 2005 following an election loss, Edi Rama took the helm. Under Rama, the party formed the Alliance for a European Albania and returned to power in 2013. Since then, the PS has maintained control, winning consecutive elections in 2017 and 2021 with 74 seats each, while advocating for European Union accession and progressive taxation.
