Archaeologists uncover a sophisticated Roman bathhouse complex in the ancient city of Hermopolis Magna
In short: Recent excavations at Hermopolis Magna have revealed a remarkably preserved Roman bathhouse, complete with intricate sewage systems and marble-lined rooms. This discovery offers a rare glimpse into the water management practices of a major regional center in Egypt during the late-Roman period, shedding light on daily life centuries ago.
Located in Upper Egypt, Hermopolis Magna was once a significant religious hub for the worship of the god Thoth. Today, the site is threatened by agricultural encroachment, which has already claimed five of the eight bath complexes originally identified by K. Bittel in 1959. To protect this heritage, archaeologist Hesham Ahmed Mohamed Abdel Kader led excavations east of the el-Ashmunein cemetery, supported by the Egypt Exploration Society.
The project, conducted in two primary seasons during 2022 and 2023, exposed the hot and cold sections of a public bath. The findings include a series of rooms featuring bathtubs, limestone floors, and a meticulously preserved sewage system. Heating was managed through a sophisticated furnace system, providing researchers with vital data on the architectural and engineering capabilities of the era. These structures are comparable to other fourth-to-sixth-century CE sites in Egypt, such as those at Kom el-Dosheh and Clysma.
Beyond the baths themselves, the excavation provides a clearer picture of urban life in a city that once supported an estimated population of 30,000 people. By documenting the main entrance, water tanks, and multi-furnace heating systems, the team is creating a comprehensive architectural plan of late-Roman water management. This work, which earned Abdel Kader the 2023 Professor Zahi Hawass award for excellence in excavation, ensures that these fragile remnants are recorded before they are lost to the surrounding landscape.
