How a group of disaffected fans built their own football club
In short: When American businessman Malcolm Glazer took over Manchester United in May 2005, many supporters felt betrayed. Instead of walking away, they chose to build something new. They founded F.C. United of Manchester, a club owned and democratically run by its members, to ensure the game remained in the hands of the fans.
The formation of F.C. United was a direct response to the 12 May 2005 takeover of Manchester United by Malcolm Glazer. While supporters had considered forming a breakaway club as early as 1998 during a BSkyB takeover attempt, the Glazer buyout became the ultimate catalyst. The idea for a new club was first proposed by the Manchester United fanzine Red Issue in February 2005.
The club's democratic structure is central to its identity. Members hold equal voting rights and own a single share each. This model has made F.C. United the second largest fan-owned football club in the UK, trailing only Exeter City. This community-driven approach was evident from the start; by 6 July 2005, the club had already secured over £100,000 in pledged funds.
Since its registration with the Manchester County Football Association on 14 June 2005, the club has experienced significant highs and lows. They achieved three consecutive promotions to reach the National League North in 2015, but were later relegated back to the Northern Premier League in 2019. Despite these shifts in tier, the club maintains a strong presence in non-league football, boasting high home attendances and a dedicated following.
The club's visual identity also reflects its roots. Their badge incorporates elements from the Manchester coat of arms, specifically a ship and a shield. This shield is derived from the heraldic design of Robert de Gresle, who served as the first lord of the manor of Manchester between 1174 and 1230.
