The record-breaking rise and nomadic journey of Portuguese forward Fábio Silva
In short: In 2019, a 17-year-old sensation began shattering decades-old records at Porto. But the path from teenage prodigy to a £35 million Premier League signing is rarely a straight line. Discover how one of Portugal's most decorated youth talents navigated a whirlwind of loans and high-stakes transfers across Europe.
Fábio Silva’s ascent began with a series of historic milestones at FC Porto. After winning the 2018–19 UEFA Youth League, he was fast-tracked to the senior squad by manager Sérgio Conceição. By late 2019, the teenager had rewritten the club's history books, becoming their youngest player in European competition and their youngest league goalscorer, surpassing marks previously held by Rúben Neves and Serafim Pereira.
His rapid rise triggered a massive move to the English Premier League. In September 2020, Wolverhampton Wanderers secured his services for a reported club-record fee of £35 million. However, establishing himself in England proved difficult. Following a period of inconsistent playing time at Wolves, Silva entered a nomadic phase characterized by various loan spells across the continent to find his rhythm.
These loans eventually yielded significant success. In 2023, while on loan at PSV Eindhoven, he helped the club secure the KNVB Cup by scoring the decisive penalty in a shootout against Ajax. His form continued to evolve through stints at Anderlecht, Rangers, and Las Palmas. Notably, while playing for the Spanish side in late 2024, he secured a high-profile victory against Barcelona during their 125th anniversary celebrations.
Now a fixture at Borussia Dortmund following his 2025 transfer, Silva has also transitioned to the senior Portugal national team. After representing his country at the under-15 level in 2017, he earned his senior debut in November 2024. Manager Roberto Martínez noted that Silva provides a distinct tactical profile compared to established Portuguese stars like Cristiano Ronaldo.
