In short: When Chester City was wound up in 2010, the club faced extinction. Instead of disappearing, a dedicated group of supporters formed a phoenix club, reclaiming their heritage and building a new future from the ashes of financial ruin.

The collapse of Chester City was precipitated by severe financial difficulties, including a 25-point deduction following an Inland Revenue challenge to a proposed CVA. On 10 March 2010, the club was officially wound up, leaving the city's footballing future in doubt. However, the formation of City Fans United (CFU) in October 2009 provided a blueprint for survival. This crisis was exacerbated by the dismissal of manager Jim Harvey, which triggered a widespread boycott by the supporters. The club's downfall was ultimately sealed when the Inland Revenue successfully overturned a proposed CVA.

The fans' movement was fueled by deep disquiet regarding the club's management, leading to on-pitch protests and a boycott in early 2010. Following the liquidation, a ballot was held to decide the new club's identity; over 1,000 members participated, with 70% voting to return to the original name, Chester FC—the name the club had held for its first 98 years. This decision ensured the new entity could maintain its historical identity. This community-driven approach allowed the club to begin competing again during the 2010–11 season.

The reformed club secured a lease for the Deva Stadium from the Cheshire West and Chester Council in May 2010. Since its relaunch, Chester FC has navigated the complexities of the English football league system, experiencing rapid promotions through the lower tiers before returning to the National League North, where they currently compete. The club has since moved through various levels of the English pyramid, including a successful stint in the Conference North. They currently compete in the National League North, the sixth tier of the football league system.
