From elite quarterback prospect to NFL tight end: the evolution of Feleipe Franks
In short: He was once a highly-rated pro-style quarterback recruit with a massive arm. Yet, after a collegiate career marked by injuries and position shifts, the former Florida standout has reinvented himself as a hybrid tight end in the professional ranks.
Feleipe Franks entered the national spotlight as a standout at Wakulla High School, where he amassed 6,86<0xC2>7 passing yards and 81 touchdowns. His talent earned him a high ranking in the 247Sports Composite, placing him as the fifth-best pro-style quarterback prospect and 54th overall. After initially committing to LSU in June 2014, he eventually moved to the University of Florida in late 2015.
His time with the Gators saw significant highs and lows. In 2017, despite a difficult start against Michigan, he secured a memorable victory against Tennessee with a 63-yard Hail Mary pass. The following year, 2018, proved more successful; he led the team to a 10–3 record and a Peach Bowl win, tallying 31 total touchdowns.
However, the trajectory of his career changed following a severe ankle injury against Kentucky in 2019. After announcing his departure from Florida in December 2019, he transferred to Arkansas in early 2020. There, he achieved a notable milestone by helping the Razorbacks snap a 20-game SEC losing streak with a win over Mississippi State.
Franks' professional journey has been defined by versatility and persistence. After entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 2021, he transitioned from a third-string quarterback role to taking repetitions as a tight end by June 2022. Following stints with the Panthers and returns to the Falcons, he continues to navigate the complexities of the professional game.
