In short: Few players can claim to have been ranked as the worst in a major league and still go on to win multiple continental championships. The Brazilian midfielder's journey spans from the intense scrutiny of a World Cup red card to becoming one of the most decorated players in Turkish football history.

Felipe Melo's career is defined by extreme highs and lows. In the 2009–10 Serie A season, his performance was so poor he was awarded the Bidone d'Oro, a prize given to the worst player in the league. This period was marked by controversy, including a heated altercation with Inter Milan's Thiago Motta following a red card for an elbow against Mario Balotelli.

However, Melo proved his resilience by finding success across several continents. During his four seasons at Galatasaray, he became a fan favorite, earning the nickname 'Pitbull' for his passionate style. He became the most decorated Brazilian player in Turkish domestic competitions, securing seven cups and surpassing the record held by former Galatasaray goalkeeper Cláudio Taffarel.

His international career with Brazil was equally dramatic. He was part of the squad that won the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, scoring in a 3–0 victory over the United States. Yet, the 2010 FIFA World Cup left a lasting scar; after providing an assist for Robinho, he was sent off in the quarter-final against the Netherlands for a stamp on Arjen Robben, facing intense criticism from fans upon his return home.

Melo's longevity allowed him to achieve significant success late in his career. After returning to Brazil to join Palmeiras in 2017, he won the Copa Libertadores in both 2020 and 2021. He continued this success at Fluminense, winning the tournament again in 2023 before announcing his retirement in early 2025 at the age of 41.
