From the clubhouse to the contract: the meteoric rise of Fernando Tatís Jr.
In short: Born into a baseball dynasty, this Dominican star transformed from a young prospect into one of the sport's most expensive talents. Yet, his journey has been defined by extreme highs, including a $340 million extension, and significant lows, including a high-profile suspension.
Fernando Tatís Jr. grew up surrounded by the mechanics of the Major Leagues. The son of former player Fernando Tatís Sr., the younger Tatís spent much of his youth in professional clubhouses, even practicing alongside stars like Robinson Canó. This early immersion helped him rise through the ranks, eventually signing with the Chicago White Sox as an international free agent in 2015 before being traded to the San Diego Padres in 2016.
His professional trajectory is marked by immense power and significant financial milestones. Before the 2021 season, he secured a 14-year, $340 million contract extension, making it the richest deal for a player not yet eligible for salary arbitration. On the field, his 2020 season was statistically dominant, leading the National League in power-speed number and posting the highest average exit velocity in the majors at 95.9 MPH. He has since earned multiple Silver Slugger and Platinum Glove awards, cementing his reputation as a 'five-tool' talent.
However, his career has not been without controversy or physical setbacks. In 2022, Tatís faced an 80-game suspension after testing positive for the anabolic steroid Clostebol, a situation that led Adidas to terminate his sponsorship. He has also navigated various injuries, including a fractured scaphoid bone and shoulder subluxations. Despite these hurdles, he remains one of the most entertaining figures in the game, frequently appearing as an All-Star and maintaining his status as a central figure in the Padres' lineup.
