In short: Fernando Gago was a midfield maestro capable of dictating the tempo for Real Madrid and Argentina. Yet, his 16-year career was a constant battle against severe injuries, from knee ligament tears to Achilles ruptures, ultimately shaping a legacy of immense talent tempered by physical fragility.

Born in Ciudadela, Argentina, on 10 April 1986, Gago emerged from the Boca Juniors youth system to become a high-profile defensive midfielder. His ability to build play and break down opposition attacks earned him comparisons to former Real Madrid star Fernando Redondo. He was a key member of the Argentina squad that won gold at the 2008 Olympics and represented his country at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He was also a member of the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship winning squad. His professional journey began in December 2004 for Boca Juniors.

However, his ascent to the elite was frequently interrupted by physical setbacks. After signing for Real Madrid in 2007 for €20 million, his time in Spain was marred by knee and muscle injuries. Even during his successful stint at Roma, where he was largely untroubled by injury, a permanent move was blocked when the club could not meet Madrid's €7 million offer. His tenure in the Spanish capital included a notable goal against Sevilla. He eventually moved to Italy on loan during the 2011–12 season.

The physical toll continued through his later years. During his second spell at Boca Juniors, he suffered an Achilles injury in a 2015 Superclásico that sidelined him for months, and another in the 2018 Copa Libertadores final. These recurring issues, alongside his tactical intelligence, defined his transition from a dynamic player to a manager, leading him to clubs like Racing Club and Universidad de Chile. After retiring from professional football in 2020, he transitioned into coaching. His managerial career has included stints with Aldosivi, Racing Club, and Guadalajara.
