In short: From an electrical engineering degree to the pinnacle of international football, Fernando Santos built a career on precision. Known as the 'Engenheiro do Penta,' he navigated the high-stakes pressure of national teams, delivering historic trophies through tactical discipline and controversial, often polarizing, decisions.

Born in Lisbon in 1954, Fernando Santos began his football journey as a left-back, primarily for Estoril. After retiring at 33, he transitioned into management, a career defined by significant success in Portugal and Greece. His early coaching years saw him lead Estoril back to the top tier in 1991, followed by stints at Estrela da Amanda and Porto. At Porto, his tactical success during their fifth consecutive championship earned him the nickname 'Engenheiro do Penta.'

Santos's influence extended deeply into the Greek Super League, where he managed AEK Athens and PAOK. His time in Greece was remarkably decorated; he was named Manager of the Season for multiple periods between 2001 and 2010 and even earned the title of Manager of the Decade for the 2000s. These successes paved the way for his appointment as the Greece national team coach in 2010, where he led the squad to the knockout stages of both Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup.

However, his legacy is also marked by intense friction. During the 2014 World Cup, a red card for dissent left him watching a loss to Costa Rica from a television screen. Later, as Portugal's manager, he achieved the nation's first major international titles at Euro 2016 and the 2019 Nations League. Yet, his tenure was not without drama; the 2022 World Cup saw him bench star Cristiano Ronaldo following a confrontation, a move that preceded his dismissal. Following spells with Poland and Beşiktaş, he most recently took charge of Azerbaijan in June 2024.
