How a World War II Radar Base Transformed into a Modern Research Powerhouse
In short: Florida Atlantic University rose from the remnants of a military airfield to become a major research institution. Today, this sprawling university system spans seven campuses, serves over 30,000 students, and operates at the cutting edge of ocean energy, marine biotechnology, and digital imaging technology in the heart of South Florida.
Established in 1964 as the inaugural public university serving the Miami metropolitan region, Florida Atlantic University initially focused exclusively on graduate and upper-division studies. The institution was built upon the grounds of the former Boca Raton Army Airfield, a critical World War II facility that served as the Army Air Corps' primary site for radar training. The land itself was largely acquired through eminent domain, displacing Japanese-American farmers from the Yamato Colony.
The university's evolution reflects a broader strategy of regional expansion. By 1984, the school began admitting lower-division undergraduates, and throughout the 1990s, it established a network of campuses across Palm Beach, Broward, and St. Lucie counties. This growth was driven by the state's need to provide higher education to a rapidly expanding population. Today, the university is classified as an R1 institution, denoting very high research activity, and maintains significant partnerships with global scientific organizations like the Max Planck Society.
Beyond its academic mission, the university has become a hub for specialized innovation. It hosts the Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center, one of only three such national centers designated by the Department of Energy, and operates a unique record label, Hoot/Wisdom Recordings. The campus environment remains deeply tied to its history; the main Boca Raton site is a designated sanctuary for burrowing owls, which have served as the university's mascot since the institution's early days.
