The wrestling world's most decorated heavyweights are often forged in private shadows
In short: Gabe Kidd’s rise to the top of global wrestling is a study in resilience. From masking his age as a teenager to battling severe mental health crises in isolation, his journey to becoming an IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion reveals the grueling human cost behind the spectacle.
Gabriel Michael McMenamin began his professional career in 2011 under the name Kid Danger. To conceal his young age, he initially performed under a mask before transitioning to the name Gabriel Kidd in 2013. His early years on the British independent scene were defined by steady progression until 2020, when he was recruited by Katsuyori Shibata for New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). This pivotal endorsement launched him into international prominence, eventually leading him to become the youngest ever Strong Openweight Champion in May 2024.
Behind the accolades of multiple titles—including the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship and various tag team honors—McMenamin has been transparent about a harrowing personal struggle. During the COVID-19 pandemic, while quarantining in Japan, he faced severe mental health issues that led to two suicide attempts and a stay in a psychiatric hospital. He later revealed that NJPW President Hiroshi Tanahashi provided critical support during this time, spending an hour every day with him via video calls.
Kidd’s career is marked by high-stakes transitions between major promotions like NJPW and All Elite Wrestling (AEW). In 2026, he moved to AEW as part of 'The Dogs' stable. Despite a series of injuries—including a knee injury in the 2025 G1 Climax and a legitimate shoulder injury during an AEW World Trios Championship reign—he remains a top-ranked competitor, currently holding his record-tying second IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship.
