The teenage prodigy who rewrote the record books for Major League Soccer
In short: At just 17 years old, Gabriel Slonina wasn't just playing professional soccer; he was shattering historical precedents. From becoming a record-breaking signing in Chicago to a multi-million dollar transfer to Chelsea, his rapid ascent through the ranks of global football is a masterclass in precocious talent.
Born in Addison, Illinois, in 2004, Gabriel Slonina’s trajectory was defined by early milestones. After joining the Chicago Fire academy in 2013, he signed a professional homegrown contract on March 8, 2019. At age 14, he became the youngest signing in the history of the Chicago Fire and the second youngest in Major League Soccer history.
His professional debut on August 4, 2021, against New York City FC, cemented his status as a phenomenon. At 17 years and 81 days, he became the youngest starting goalkeeper in league history. During that match, he recorded a clean sheet, making him the youngest goalkeeper to achieve such a feat in the MLS.
Slonina's talent soon attracted global attention. On August 2, 2022, Premier League club Chelsea secured his services for a transfer fee of $10 million, which could have risen to $11 million with add-ons. While he initially remained in Chicago on loan, he officially joined Chelsea on January 1, 2023, debuting for their under-21 side shortly after.
His international career has been marked by significant decisions. Though he was called up to the Polish senior team in May 2022, he declined the invitation to represent his ancestral homeland, choosing instead to commit to the United States. On January 25, 2023, he became the youngest goalkeeper to ever play for the United States senior team during a match against Serbia.
