The defensive midfielder who helped Atlético Madrid reclaim their domestic glory
In short: From a youth academy product to a La Liga champion, Gabi's career was defined by grit and tactical intelligence. Known for his combativeness and ability to dictate play, he transitioned from a reliable midfielder to a key leader, helping his childhood club secure their first league title since 1996.
Gabriel Luis Fernández Arenas, known professionally as Gabi, established himself as a premier defensive midfielder through a career marked by resilience and leadership. After developing in the Atlético Madrid youth system, he spent formative years at Getafe CF and Real Zaragoza. His time in Zaragoza was particularly pivotal; during the 2010–11 campaign, he served as captain and scored a career-best ten goals, including six from the penalty spot, to help the club escape relegation.
Gabi's return to Atlético Madrid in 2011 marked the beginning of a highly successful second spell. Under manager Diego Simeone, he was appointed captain and became a cornerstone of the squad. His influence was vital in the 2013–14 season, where he helped secure the La Liga title—the club's first since 1996—following a decisive corner kick assist to Diego Godín in a match against FC Barcelona. His continental pedigree is equally notable, having been named to the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season in both 2013–14 and 2015–16.
Beyond his domestic success, Gabi found triumph in the Europa League, scoring a crucial last-minute goal in the 2018 final against Olympique de Marseille to secure a 3–0 victory. After a stint in Qatar with Al Sadd, where he partnered with fellow Spaniard Xavi, he retired in 2020 at age 37. Today, his tactical understanding continues to drive his career as he moves into management, having held coaching roles at Getafe and Zaragoza.
