The dual life of a rugby league star turned outlaw
In short: Gary Sullivan was an elite athlete who reached the pinnacle of Australian rugby league in the 1970s. Yet, behind his sporting success lay a shadow career as one of Queensland's most prolific bank robbers, eventually leading to a life defined by both professional glory and violent crime.
Gary Sullivan first rose to prominence in the New South Wales Rugby Football League. After moving from Kurri Kurri to Sydney in 1970, he joined Newtown. His talent was immediate; despite playing only six first-grade games for the club, he was selected as a lock for Australia's victorious 1970 World Cup squad. By 1972, he had debuted for New South Wales and scored two tries in a 36–11 victory against New Zealand at the SCG before competing in the World Cup final against Great Britain.
However, Sullivan’s life took a dramatic turn between 1985 and 1991. Alongside his stepfather, Bill Orchard, he engaged in a sophisticated crime spree across South East Queensland, including Logan City, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast. The pair executed 14 separate armed robberies of banks and armored cars. Their exploits were so significant that by the time they were apprehended in 1991, they had successfully pulled off six of the top ten highest-value heists in the history of Queensland.
The legal consequences were severe. In December 1991, Sullivan was convicted of 12 counts of Armed Robbery and two counts of Armed Robbery in Accompany of Violence, receiving a 20-year prison sentence with parole eligibility after seven years. His criminal history remained a point of contention for decades; it wasn't until May 28, 2026, that he was arrested again in Southport, Queensland, facing new charges related to an armed robbery and shooting incident at Chadstone Shopping Centre in 1994.
