The architect of a rock dynasty who stepped into the spotlight
In short: While REO Speedwagon became a household name for stadium rock, the band's early sonic identity was forged by a self-taught guitarist from Illinois. Gary Richrath didn't just play the lead; he was a primary songwriter and producer who helped steer the group toward its first platinum success.
Gary Richrath's journey to rock stardom began in East Peoria, Illinois. Originally a saxophone player in his school band, he transitioned to the guitar as a teenager, teaching himself the instrument. By 1968, he was already active in the local music scene with a group called Suburban 9 to 5. This formative period of self-instruction allowed him to develop a distinct style that would eventually define the sound of one of the most successful American rock bands of the late 1970s.
Richrath joined REO Speedwagon in 1970, remaining a core member for nearly two decades. His contributions were foundational; he wrote, performed on, and sang on a string of early hits including "Golden Country" (1972) and "Ridin' the Storm Out" (1973). His versatility was a key asset to the band's growth, as he provided lead vocals for several tracks between 1973 and 1976. A major turning point occurred in 1977 when Richrath and his bandmates took over production duties, a move that directly resulted in the band's first platinum album.
After departing the band in 1989, Richrath launched a solo project under his own name, releasing the album Only the Strong Survive in 1992. Though he eventually disbanded his solo group in the late 1990s, his legacy remained tied to his former bandmates. In a poignant full-circle moment in 2013, he reunited with REO Speedwagon for a benefit concert in Bloomington, Illinois, performing "Ridin' the Storm Out" to support families affected by a local tornado. Richrath passed away in 2015 at the age of 65 following complications from a stomach ailment.
