From a two million dollar bonus to a fresh start in San Diego
In short: In 2017, the Chicago White Sox invested heavily in a rising star, handing Gavin Sheets a $2 million signing bonus. After a rollercoaster journey through the minor leagues and a dramatic MLB debut, the first baseman is now attempting to redefine his career with the San Diego Padres.
Gavin Sheets' ascent through professional baseball began with significant expectations. After being drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 2014 but opting to play for Wake Forest University, he was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the second round of the 2017 MLB draft. As the 49th overall pick, Sheets signed with a substantial $2 million bonus, marking him as a high-priority talent for the organization.
His path to the majors was marked by both rapid progress and unexpected interruptions. Sheets climbed through the minor league ranks, from the Arizona League to Double-A Birmingham, where he recorded 16 home runs in 2019. However, the 2020 season provided a unique challenge when the COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of the minor league season, preventing him from competing for an entire year.
Sheets finally reached the Major Leagues in June 202 1. His debut against the Minnesota Twins was remarkably productive; he recorded his first MLB hit, RBI, and run all in a single game against pitcher Kenta Maeda. He followed this with his first major league home run the very next day. By July 2021, he had even secured a walk-off three-run home run against José Berríos.
Despite these early highlights, Sheets faced significant statistical hurdles. In 2023, his performance against left-handed pitchers dropped to a .053 batting average. Following a period of being non-tendered by the White Sox in late 2024, Sheets signed a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres in early 2025. He made an immediate impact on Opening Day, hitting a solo home run against the Atlanta Braves.
