In short: When a devastating earthquake struck Turkey in 2023, Gaziantep F.K. didn't just lose its season; it faced an existential crisis. The story of this club is one of radical rebranding, surviving financial collapse by neighbors, and weaving the city’s famous culinary identity into its very crest.

Founded in 1988 as Sankospor, the club spent decades navigating the lower tiers of Turkish football under various identities. It functioned primarily as Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyespor for many years until a major restructuring in 2017. This period marked a shift toward professional ambition, culminating in a promotion to the Süper Lig—the nation's highest division—in 2019. To better represent the city's broader identity, it adopted its current name, Gaziantep Futbol Kulübü.

The club’s visual identity is deeply rooted in local culture. In 2017, it abandoned its original blue and white colors for a red, black, and white palette. Its modern crest features a layered pattern inspired by baklava slices, a staple of Gaziantep's culinary tradition. This design choice serves as a bridge between the city’s historical roots and the team's dynamic sporting goals.

The club's resilience was tested in February 2023 following the Turkey–Syria earthquakes. While the city suffered immense destruction, the Turkish Football Federation granted Gaziantep F.K. a unique exemption: they were allowed to withdraw from the remainder of the season without facing relegation. The team returned for the 2023–24 campaign at the Gaziantep Stadium, finishing 11th and securing their spot in the top flight despite the surrounding devastation.

Gaziantep F.K. also serves as a successor of sorts to the city's footballing spirit. After the historic club Gaziantepspor declared bankruptcy and dissolved in July 2020, Gaziantep F.K. emerged as the primary professional representative. While it shares the city’s colors and passion, it remains a legally distinct entity with no connection to the former club's debts.
