In short: After decimating the Greek pantheon, Kratos resurfaces in ancient Scandinavia. This 2018 reimagining strips away the series' fixed camera and chained blades, replacing them with a grounded, intimate perspective. As Kratos guides his young son, Atreus, through a world of Norse gods, he must confront the ghosts of his past.

The 2018 God of War represents a radical departure for the franchise. Creative director Cory Barlog, returning to the series he helped build, sought to move beyond the fixed cinematic cameras of earlier entries. He implemented a continuous, over-the-shoulder shot that spans the entire game without a single cut or loading screen. This technical feat, which forty percent of the development team initially doubted, was designed to create a more intimate, player-controlled experience. The team drew inspiration from the exploration and scavenging mechanics of Resident Evil 4 and the bold vision of Resident Evil 7.

Mechanically, the game replaces Kratos's signature double-chained blades with the Leviathan Axe, a magical weapon infused with ice elemental magic that can be thrown and summoned back, much like Mjölnir. Combat is now combo-based and includes role-playing elements, such as crafting armor and upgrading skills with experience points. While the game is not an open world, it offers an open structure with fast travel, allowing players to explore six of the nine Norse realms, including Midgard, Alfheim, and Helheim. The game also introduces Atreus, whose assistance in combat and puzzle-solving is central to the gameplay.

The narrative follows Kratos and Atreus as they journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos's second wife and Atreus's mother, at the highest peak in the nine realms. The story explores the dynamic between father and son, with Kratos struggling to keep his divine past a secret. As they encounter Norse figures like Baldur, Freya, and the World Serpent, they discover that their journey was prophesied by the Giants. The game’s success—selling 23 million copies by November 2022—cemented its status as a revitalization of the series, proving that a grounded, character-driven approach could breathe new life into a long-running franchise.
