In short: Before he became the legendary Ghost of Sparta, Kratos was a young soldier training in the Agoge. This 2026 Metroidvania title, crafted by Mega Cat Studios and Santa Monica Studio, transports players back to the franchise's Greek roots to uncover a formative, emotional chapter of the protagonist's youth.

Released on February 12, 2026, for the PlayStation 5, God of War: Sons of Sparta serves as a chronological prequel to the entire series. The narrative is framed as a lesson told by an adult Kratos to his daughter, Calliope, while he serves as a captain in the Spartan Army. The story centers on a teenage Kratos and his younger brother, Deimos, as they navigate the rigorous training of the Agoge and embark on a mission to find a missing comrade named Vasilis.

The gameplay marks a departure from the recent Norse-themed entries, returning to the series' original Greek mythology setting. As a two-dimensional Metroidvania, the game emphasizes exploration, platforming, and puzzle-solving. Because the story takes place before Kratos acquires his iconic Blades of Chaos, he relies on traditional Spartan equipment, specifically the Dory spear and Aspis shield. Players can enhance these tools and the Belt of Tyche using a crafting system that requires resources gathered throughout various Laconian locations, including the Laconian Woods and Mount Taygetos.

The project originated from an email sent by Mega Cat Studios to Santa Monica Studio, driven by the team's desire to reimagine the franchise through a retro lens. Composer Bear McCreary returned to score the game, blending modern orchestral elements with chiptune aesthetics to reflect the dual nature of the experience. While the game received mixed critical reception regarding its combat and Metroidvania design, it was praised for its narrative depth and artistic presentation. It remains a unique experiment in the series, offering a glimpse into the brotherly bond and early moral conflicts that shaped the man Kratos would eventually become.
