In short: Hamish Harding was a modern explorer whose life was defined by extreme records, from circumnavigating the globe via both poles to descending into the deepest reaches of the Mariana Trench. While often labeled a billionaire in the press, his true legacy lies in his relentless pursuit of human achievement and exploration.

Born in London in 1964, George Hamish Livingston Harding was inspired by the Apollo 11 moon landing as a child. His career began in the IT industry during the 1990s before he founded the investment firm Action Group in 1999 and the aircraft brokerage company Action Aviation in 2004. Based in the United Arab Emirates, Harding became a prominent member of The Explorers Club, using his resources to push the boundaries of travel and science.

Harding’s record-breaking feats were diverse and daring. In 2019, he led the One More Orbit mission, which circumnavigated the Earth via the North and South Poles in 46 hours and 40 minutes. By 2021, he had descended to the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench, setting records for the greatest distance and time spent at full ocean depth. He also flew to space on a Blue Origin mission in 2022 and facilitated the reintroduction of cheetahs to India, demonstrating a commitment to both conservation and the expansion of human frontiers.

Despite his public profile, Harding’s financial status remained a subject of speculation; Forbes never included him on its billionaire list, and his exact net worth was never verified. His life ended abruptly on 18 June 2023, when the Titan submersible he was aboard imploded during an expedition to the Titanic wreckage. The tragedy, which claimed five lives, occurred just days before his 59th birthday, marking a somber conclusion to a life spent chasing the extraordinary.
