In short: Formed in 1828, the Hellenic Army has navigated two centuries of radical transformation. From its origins as a collection of irregular fighters during the War of Independence to its current role leading the Balkan Battle Group, the force has survived internal schisms, foreign occupations, and the pressures of rapid modernization.

The Hellenic Army traces its roots to the Greek War of Independence (1821–1829), where the provisional government first attempted to establish regular units in 1822. Early efforts were hampered by financial instability, leading to frequent disbandments. It was not until the governorship of Ioannis Kapodistrias (1828–1831) that a structured military apparatus began to take shape, including the creation of the Hellenic Army Academy and the Engineering Corps. Throughout this period, French military influence was pervasive, with instructors from General Maison's Expeditionary Corps shaping the army’s tactics and organization.

The late 19th century proved a difficult era for the military. Despite the introduction of universal conscription in 1879 and efforts to professionalize the officer corps under Charilaos Trikoupis, the army remained largely unprepared for the Greco-Turkish War of 1897. The resulting defeat catalyzed a major reform program under Georgios Theotokis, which introduced modern artillery and updated field uniforms. By the time the Balkan Wars began, these reforms—combined with a new mobilization system—allowed Greece to field 125,000 troops, far exceeding foreign estimates of 50,000.

The 20th century saw the army endure the National Schism, the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922), and the Axis occupation during World War II. Following the war, the army participated in the Korean War with over 10,000 personnel. In recent decades, the force has undergone a significant reorganization, shifting from traditional infantry formations to mechanized brigades. Today, the Hellenic Army operates under the General Staff, with commands like the 1st Army in Larissa and the Supreme Military Command of the Interior and Islands in Athens, maintaining readiness for both national defense and international security missions.
