In short: In the heart of Japan's Edo period, a desperate Shogunate mission unfolds. To secure the elixir of life, executioners and criminals are thrust into a deadly, enclosed landscape. But on the island of Shinsenkyo, the greatest threats might not be the humans, but the very flora and fauna themselves.

The premise of Yuji Kaku's manga, Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku, centers on a high-stakes expedition to the island of Shinsenkyo. The Shogunate, seeking the elusive elixir of immortality, assembles the 'Vanguard Party'—a group of ten death row criminals. To ensure they do not flee, each convict is paired with a Yamada Asaemon executioner, authorized to kill them upon any attempt at escape. This perilous mission follows the failure of five previous expedition teams sent to the same location. The Shogunate's agents are specifically searching for the legendary realm located southwest of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

The story follows the ninja Gabimaru the Hollow and his assigned monitor, Yamada Asa .Sagiri. Their journey leads them to an island populated by the strange creations of the hermit Shufu (Jofuku). Through his experiments with 'Tao'—a form of energy—he produced the nearly immortal, androgynous Lord Tensen and various sentient beings like the Doshi and Hoko. The island's ecosystem is inherently predatory, featuring plants that pose significant threats to any interloper. The hermit's biological manipulations include the creation of mindless Shoshin, which are animal-human hybrids designed to kill intruders. He also utilized a process called naitanho to merge human and flower Tao.

While the series is celebrated for its intense action and 'macabre art,' the narrative depth lies in the shifting dynamics between its protagonists. Kaku originally envisioned a framework of mismatched pairs forced to cooperate in enclosed spaces. As the story progressed, the focus shifted from Gabimaru's personal growth to Sagiri's struggle with the paradoxes of her role, exploring themes of empathy and the human cost of brutality. The series achieved massive commercial success, with circulation exceeding 6.5 million copies by early 2024. Critics have even noted its potential place within the 'Dark Trio' of modern Shōnen Jump titles.
