In short: In the 2017 horror game Hello Neighbor, the antagonist is more than just a threat. Using advanced artificial intelligence, the neighbor observes your patterns, setting bear traps and surveillance cameras specifically where you frequent, turning your own survival strategies into your greatest vulnerabilities.

Developed by the Russian studio Dynamic Pixels, Hello Neighbor follows Nicky Roth as he attempts to uncover the dark secrets hidden in the basement of his neighbor, Theodore Peterson. While the game's initial alpha builds emerged between 2016 and 2017, the full release arrived on 8 December 2017. The experience is defined by a reactive AI system designed to adapt to player behavior. If you repeatedly use a specific doorway, the neighbor might place water bucket traps above it or deploy cameras to monitor your movements, forcing players to constantly innovate their approach.

The narrative spans decades, beginning with an incident in 1996 where a young Nicky witnesses Theodore forcing a child into his basement. By 2015, an adult Nicky returns to a decaying Raven Brooks, encountering surreal, expanded versions of the house and a shadowy entity known as "The Thing." This psychological depth and striking art style earned praise, even though the game faced significant criticism on Metacritic regarding its technical performance, controls, and gameplay mechanics.

Despite a failed Kickstarter campaign that raised only $12,809, the franchise expanded significantly under publisher tinyBuild. The studio eventually acquired the development team to form Eerie Guest Studios, investing $15 million into the series. This expansion has led to a vast ecosystem of spin-offs, including the prequel Hide and Seek, multiplayer titles like Secret Neighbor and Hello Engineer, and even an animated series, Welcome to Raven Brooks. As the franchise grows, developers continue to iterate, with Hello Neighbor 3 currently in the playtest stage as of 2026.
