From high school MVP to breaking Alabama's long winning drought
In short: Hendon Hooker’s journey to the NFL was defined by a dramatic shift in scenery and a historic moment of redemption. After finding his footing at Virginia Tech, he moved to Tennessee, where he orchestrated one of the most significant upsets in recent college football history.
Hooker's path began at James B. Dudley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he established himself as a dual-threat standout. He finished his high school career as the all-time passing leader, accumulating over 6,000 yards and 55 touchdowns while also leading the team to two state championships. Despite being a four-star recruit with numerous Power 5 offers, his initial collegiate path took him to Virginia Tech in 2016.
His time at Virginia Tech was marked by patience and persistence. After being redshirted in 2018, Hooker eventually took over the starting role in 2019 following a period of struggles for the previous starter. He helped guide the Hokies to a bowl appearance that season, contributing both as a passer and a runner. However, it was his transfer to the University of Tennessee in 2021 that truly catalyzed his national profile.
Under coach Josh Heupel, Hooker transitioned from a backup to a dominant force in the SEC. In 2021, he topped the conference in both passing efficiency and adjusted yards per attempt. The pinnacle of this collegiate run occurred in 2022, when he led Tennessee to its first win over Alabama since 2006. His clutch performance against the Crimson Tide helped propel the Volunteers to a #3 national ranking and their first top-five finish since 2001.
Hooker's professional career has been a test of resilience following an ACL injury that sidelined him during his rookie year with the Detroit Lions. After navigating several practice squads and roster moves between 2025 and 2026, he eventually signed with the Tennessee Titans in April 2026. Beyond the field, Hooker remains active in community outreach, co-authoring a scripture-based alphabet book for children to combine his faith with his athletic platform.
