In short: Tucked between South Africa and Mozambique, the Kingdom of Eswatini is a small nation defined by dramatic elevation shifts and a deep, complex history. From the rugged Highveld mountains to the fertile eastern plains, this landlocked country recently reclaimed its traditional name, shedding its colonial-era title of Swaziland.

The landscape of Eswatini is a study in geologic contrast, organized into four distinct longitudinal belts. In the west, the Highveld rises to over 6,000 feet, characterized by ancient granites and rugged terrain that historically served as the final region to be settled. Moving eastward, the land descends through the rolling Middleveld—the heartland of the nation—and the undulating Lowveld, before reaching the Lubombo escarpment. This 4,000-foot drop in elevation over just 50 miles creates a subtropical climate heavily influenced by moist air from the Indian Ocean.

The nation’s identity is rooted in the Embo-Dlamini, a branch of the Embo-Nguni people who migrated south from the Great Lakes region. Oral history links the Swazi people to the 'reeds'—a reference to their ancestral crossing of the Zambezi River—and the Dlamini clan, which established early chiefdoms in the Maputaland-Lubombo region. By the 19th century, King Mswati II, a formidable nation-builder who ruled from 1840 to 1868, expanded the territory significantly. His influence was so profound that the country was long known as Swaziland in his honor.

Modern Eswatini maintains a unique political structure, operating as a monarchy with a constitution that has been in effect since 2006. The national capital, Lobamba, serves as the legislative seat, while the administrative and judicial center is located in Mbabane. In April 2018, King Mswati III officially transitioned the country’s name to the Kingdom of Eswatini. Today, the nation balances these deep-seated traditions with a modern economy, where the local currency, the lilangeni, is pegged directly to the South African rand.
