In short: Kosovo’s history is a complex tapestry of shifting borders, ethnic migration, and competing national narratives. Once the center of the Serbian empire, the region underwent a profound demographic evolution over centuries of Ottoman rule and Yugoslav politics, eventually becoming a focal point for modern Balkan independence movements and international disagreement.

From the 6th century, South Slavs settled the Balkans, and by the later Middle Ages, Kosovo served as the heart of the Serbian Nemanjić dynasty. The region was densely populated by Serbs and dotted with significant cultural sites, such as the Dečani Monastery, built between 1327 and 1335. However, the 1389 Battle of Kosovo marked a turning point, leading to direct Ottoman control by the mid-15th century.

Following an Austrian invasion in 1690, a massive migration occurred as thousands of Serbs retreated with the Austrian army. This exodus, combined with the later abolition of the Serbian Orthodox patriarchate at Peć in 1766, diminished Kosovo’s status as a Serbian cultural center. Simultaneously, the region saw a steady rise in the Albanian population, with Prizren emerging as a hub for Albanian identity by the late 19th century.

The 20th century brought rapid political volatility. After World War I, Kosovo was incorporated into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. During World War II, it was briefly united with Albania under Axis occupation. Post-war Yugoslavia initially suppressed nationalist sentiment, but by the 1960s, policies shifted toward 'Albanization.' By 1991, ethnic Albanians comprised four-fifths of the population, while the Serb share had dropped below one-fifth.

Tensions peaked in the 1980s as economic strain and civil unrest grew. Slobodan Milošević exploited these grievances to rise to power, eventually stripping Kosovo of its autonomy in the late 1980s. This centralization of power and the subsequent suppression of the Albanian majority set the stage for the conflicts of the 1990s, forever altering the region's geopolitical trajectory.
