In short: Malawi is a landlocked nation with a human history stretching back over 50,000 years. Before it became a British protectorate and eventually an independent republic, the region was shaped by the powerful Maravi Confederacy, shifting Bantu migrations, and the profound, often traumatic, impacts of the regional slave trade.

The archaeological record of Malawi reveals human activity spanning tens of thousands of years, with fossil remains of early Homo sapiens dated between 8000 and 2000 BCE. By the first few centuries CE, Bantu-speaking peoples arrived, introducing ironworking and slash-and-burn agriculture. This era of settlement culminated in the 15th century with the rise of the Maravi Confederacy, a centralized political state that, at its 17th-century peak, influenced vast territories across modern-day Zambia and Mozambique.

The 18th and 19th centuries brought significant shifts in both agriculture and social structure. Farmers moved toward intensive cultivation of high-carbohydrate crops like maize and rice, but this progress was interrupted by the expansion of the slave trade. Between 1790 and 1860, demand for enslaved people surged, exacerbated by the arrival of Yao and Ngoni peoples who established their own spheres of influence. During this period, Islam was introduced by Swahili-speaking traders, while Christianity arrived in the 1860s via Scottish missionaries like David Livingstone.

British colonial authority solidified in the 1890s, establishing the protectorate that would eventually be known as Nyasaland. Colonial rule prioritized European settlers over the African majority, leading to the neglect of local agriculture and the forced migration of workers. The imposition of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in the early 1950s served as a catalyst for nationalist resistance. Under the leadership of Hastings Kamuzu Banda, the federation was dissolved, and Malawi achieved independence on July 6, 1964, marking the beginning of its modern political era.
